Single strand soft Monel Trolling Wire is the ultimate line for wire fishing.Available in various lengths.
AFW’s nickel-copper, Monel trolling wire is soft, single strand wire, carefully annealed for maximum flexibility and strength.
Due to its greater density, the Monel wire sinks rapidly and stays deeper than stainless steel and other trolling lines, allowing the angler to get down deep using shorter lengths of line.
Special processing by AFW gives the wire exceptional kink and abrasion resistance and is ideal for both fresh and saltwater trolling. The high strength of the AFW Monel wire and the excellent ductility, result in a small diameter per pound test providing greater reel capacity.
As for the sinking rate, so many things come into play, such as speed of the boat, weight of the lure, etc. As a rule of thumb, when dropping 10 mt (33 feet) of Monel straight down, under controlled conditions, the depth it will reach is 1 mt of depth (3 feet).
This is a very good value accessory for the price. This AFW nickel-copper alloy, makes an excellent wire for dragging baits at depth and hooking hard-charging game fish, such as Striped Bass and Wahoo.
The Monel trolling wire is made in USA by AFW.
In the Mediterranean, Monel is mainly used with Big Game Trolling gear. Care must be taken when using with a rod, as Monel can damage the guides ceramic rings, so it is recommended to use a rod with Roller guides. Please find below, a list of rods and reels that meet the requirements for fishing with Monel:
| Model | Test (kg) | Test (lb) | Diameter (mm) | Diameter (inch) | Meters per kg | Available Lengths (m) |
| H030 | 14 | 30 | 0.56 | 0.22 | 462 | 91.5 / 182 / 305 |
| H040 | 18 | 40 | 0.63 | 0.25 | 358 | 91.5 / 182 / 305 |
| H050 | 23 | 50 | 0.71 | 0.28 | 285 | 91.5 / 182 / 305 |
| H060 | 27 | 60 | 0.79 | 0.31 | 233 | 182 |
When using the Monel line, it is suggested to follow a few rules, to prevent damages to your equipment. Monel can be hard on the rods rings, hence either the rings must be full metal, or the rod must be equipped with rollers. Ceramic inserts usually dont last with Monel.
Secondly, can the Monel can cause electrolysis in the reels spool? Electrolysis and corrosion can occur whenever dissimilar metals meet.
The use of Monel wire in a fishing reel with a metal spool, can cause electrolysis. Depending on the amount of usage, it is suggested to protect the spool, with the Two Component Epoxy System ES 35, which creates a coating of high-strength, high-modulus, epoxy resin, that protects the spool from coming in contact with the Monel. Take caution during the application, as 3 layers are required, while the spool rotates. You should not allow the resin to enter the inside of the reel, as it might cause damage.
Such is the case of Monel/SS for the line and Aluminum for the spool. A few ways to protect against electrolysis would be to:
